“Wasteland companion”(Merge records) is the solo album, recently released, by M. Ward, the guitarist of band She & Him formed by him along with the actress and singer Zooey Deschanel, featuring also her in a duet as well as Mike Mogis of Bright eyes, Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Howe Gelb, front-man of Giant Sand and John Parrish. A work representing a kind of travel diary, resuming the artistic path of M Ward and being “the best balance” – as the artist asserts – “between light and dark” he made.

Un’ opera che rappresenta un diario di viaggio che riassume il cammino artistico di M. Ward ed “é il migliore equilibrio” – come afferma l’ artista – “tra luce e ombra” da lui realizzato.

I recently attended the party which was held in Rome at the Micca Club for celebrating the latest edition of MA on Styling for the entertainment by the renowned Rome European Design Institute (IED) – after being part of the commission of experts, featuring the renowned fashion historian and curator Bonizza Giordani Aragno, director of MA along with the bright journalist and fashion historian and curator Sofia Gnoli, the brilliant filmmaker and film producer Michele Civetta and many other ones who evaluated the final works made by the students – where it has showcased the final works by the students and it was screened the videos they made, shot at the club, featuring the theme of burlesque. A joyful evening I enjoyed along with friends and artists as Leopoldo Mastelloni – with whom I shared a hilarious conversation about burlesque, theatre and ukulele – under the sign of fashion, young talents, music and fun.

Ho recentemente partecipato al party che si é tenuto a Roma presso il Micca Club per celebrare l’ ultima edizione del Master in Styling per lo spettacolo del rinomato Istituto Europeo di Design(IED) di Roma – dopo essere parte della commissione di esperti di cui é stata protagonista la famosa storica della moda, curatrice e docente Bonizza Giordani Aragno, direttore del master unitamente alla giornalista, storica della moda e docente Sofia Gnoli, il regista e produttore cinematografico Michele Civetta e molti altri che hanno valutato i final works degli studenti) – in cui sono stati esposti i final works degli studenti e proiettati i cortometraggi da loro realizzati, girati al club, di cui è stato protagonista il tema del burlesque. Una gioiosa serata che ho apprezzato unitamente ad amici e artisti quali Leopoldo Mastelloni – con il quale ho condiviso una ilare conversazione sul burlesque, teatro e l’ ukulele – all’ insegna di moda, giovani talenti, musica e divertimento.

It will be released on 7th May 2012 “Dr. Dee”(Parlophone), the album-opera thought for theatre, made by Damon Albarn – front-man of Blur and creator of Gorillaz band – teaming with the director Rufus Norris, recorded with the BBC Philarmonic Orchestra and staged during the Manchester International Theatre Festival inspired to the persona of John Dee – who lived during the Sixteenth century and has been councilor of Queen Elisabeth 1st, alchemist, astrologist, mathematician and also spy – as well as to the comics by Alan Moore and, featuring a “strange pastoral folk” – as the artist asserts – and joining his voice to the first British choruses, African and Renaissance sounds. A little masterpiece for all the ones who are devoted to the work of a bright artist.

Un piccolo capolavoro per coloro che sono devoti all’ opera di un brillante artista.

Un evento imperdibile per apprezzare musica e divertimento a New York!
Lady Jaye & Genesis P-Orridge
It has recently released in the USA cinemas “The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye”, the film by Marie Losier, winner of many awards as the Teddy award at the Berlin Film Festival Forum, the Grand Prize in Lisbon at Indilisboa and many other ones, documentary featuring an intimate portrait of the life and work of bright performer artist and pioneer musician Genesis Breyer P-Orridge – front-man of Throbbing Gristle, celebrated industrial, electro band Psychic Tv, later turned into the PTV3 (band celebrating the idea of pleasure as arm, pandroginy as symbol of union and life opposed to the idea of separation and death) – and her wife Lady Jaye – died in 2007 -, with whom he made concrete the idea of “pandroginy”, resulting from a romantic idea, the idea of englobing one with the other – as Genesis P-Orridge asserted -, “becoming one big blob of love”. The idea has arisen from the “cut up” idea in literature by William Burroughs and Brion Gysin and the work they made “The third mind”(Groove Pr, 1982), but they made a further step, from the third mind we made the third person, resorting to the cosmetic surgery in order to be more similar as possible, two half of a new human being, P-Orridge, a new entity existing just when Genesis and Lady Jaye are together. The movie is essentially a vibrant tribute to love or rather – as Genesis P-Orridge says – “the greatest love affair of all times”, dedication, but also gives precious reflections about the idea of beauty and the performative process connecting innate beauty to the artificial one.

É stato recentemente pubblicato nei cinema statunitensi “The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye”, la pellicola di Marie Losier, vincitrice di molteplici premi quali il Teddy award at the Berlin Film Festival Forum, il Gran Premio a Lisbona durante Indilisboa e molti altri, documentario che ha quale protagonista un intimo ritratto della vita e opera del brillante performer e pionieristico musicista Genesis Breyer P-Orridge – leader dei Throbbing Gristle, della celebre band industrial, electro Psychic Tv, successivamente trasformata nei PTV3 (band che celebra l’ idea del piacere quale arma, la pandroginia quale simbolo dell’ unione e della vita, contrapposta all’ idea di separazione e della morte) – e sua moglie her wife Lady Jaye – morta nel 2007 – con la quale ha concretizzato l’ idea di pandoginia, derivante da un’ idea romantica, “l’ idea di inglobarsi l’ uno con l’ altro” – come ha affermato Genesis P-Orridge -, “diventando un unico grande blob d’ amore”. L’ idea è nata dal concetto di “cut up” nella letteratura ad opera di William Burroughs e Brion Gysin e l’ opera da loro realizzata “The third mind”( Groove Pr, 1982), ma costoro hanno effettuato un passo ulteriore, dal terzo uomo hanno creato la terza persona, ricorrendo alla chirurgia plastic al fine di essere il più simile possibile, due metà di un nuovo essere umano, P- Orridge, una nuova entità che esiste soltanto quando Genesis P-Orridge e Lady Jaye sono insieme. Il film è essenzialmente un vibrante tributo all’ amore o meglio – come dice Genesis P-Orridge – alla “più grande storia d’ amore di tutti i tempi”, alla dedizione, ma offer anche preziose riflessioni sull’ idea della bellezza e il processo performativo che connette la bellezza innata a quella artificiale.

Friendship, creativity and its sharing, brilliant combination of joined together energies give rise to “Susie says…”(Powerhouse books, 19, 95 $, available for purchase on www.powerhousebooks.com/site/?p=11664), a book by the video-producer and photographer Gina Garan – who turned during the Nineties the doll Blythe into a cult object and star of the books “This is Blythe”, “Hello Blythe!”, “Blythe Style” she made – and the eclectic, iconic artist – author, performer artist, singer, songwriter, actor and visual artist -, dear friend and precious, vibrant individual Justin Vivian Bond which will be released on 27th March 2012, featuring the photographs made by Gina Garan of doll from Seventies Susie, accompanied by the her thoughts, created by Justin Vivian Bond. A genuine fetish to have about which the two friends talked about, telling about themselves in the joyful following interview.
What is the idea giving rise to the book “Susie says”…?
GG: “I’ve always loved taking photos of dolls. I’ve done so since I was a little girl. Over the past 12 years I’ve done a bunch of books about a doll called Blythe. I LOVE her! And I loved doing the books, but the one thing that was missing was her ‘voice’. When I started shooting Susie I knew right from the start that I wanted to know what was going on inside her head, behind her eyes and so, I asked Justin to speak for her! And he did it perfectly!”
JVB: “My darling friend Gina asked me to collaborate on this book with her. I loved “This is Blythe,” and of course I adore Gina, so when she asked me to work on Susie Says with her, I batted my eyelashes for effect a few times, and immediately said yes”.
Creativity, friendship and the idea of sharing to which extent is the core of your teaming with Gina Garan?
GG: “Justin and I have been friends for many, many years. I think he’s one of the wittiest, most urbane people I’ve ever known! So of course, I wanted him to help me give Susie her voice. Our process was very simple: I took the photos and for the text, I took Justin’s tweets from his twitter page and matched them up with the appropriate shot. In some cases I saw a tweet that I liked and shot a photo to match it. It was very much a back-and-forth process”.
JVB: “Gina and I have been friends for a long time. We met on Fire Island when I was still performing as Kiki in my cabaret act Kiki and Herb(awarded in 2007 with the Tony nominated award). Gina and I decided to make K and H merchandise so we sat on the deck of her house in Fire Island, smoked weed, and made beaded bracelets that said, “People Die”. ”
What are your forthcoming projects?
GG: “I’m in the process of redesigning an actual Susie doll! She was originally made in the 70s 9very poorly, I might add!!) — She’s being revamped and restyled and will be taking the world by storm very soon!”
JVB: “My new CD, Silver Wells, is going to be released June 5th. On this record, I interpret songs by a variety of artists, which are all written as first person narratives. It’s a landscape of the mind, partly inspired by Maria Wyeth, the lead character in Joan Didion’ s 1970 novel, “Play it as it Lays” ”.

Qual’è l’idea che dà vita al libro “Susie says”…?
GG: “ Ho sempre amato fotografare le bambole. L’ho fatto sin da quando ero bambina. Da più di dodici anni ho realizzato una serie di libri su una bambola di nome Blythe. La AMO! Ed ho amato realizzare i libri, ma l’ unica cosa che era mancante era la sua “voce”.. Quando ho cominciato a fotografare Susie sapevo già dall’ inizio che volevo sapere cosa succedeva nella sua testa, dinanzi ai suoi occhi e così ho chiesto a Justin di parlare con lei! E lo ha fatto alla perfezione!”
JVB: “La mia cara amica Gina mi ha chiesto di collaborare a questo libro con lei. Ho amato “This is Blythe” e adoro Gina naturalmente, così quando mi ha chiesto di lavorare a “Susie Says..” con lei, ho sbattuto le ciglia un paio di volte per l’ impressione ed ho immediatamente detto di si”.
Creatività, amicizia e l’ idea della condivisione in che misura é la base della tua collaborazione con Justin Vivian Bond/Gina Garan?
GG: “Justin ed io siamo stati amici da molti, molti anni. Penso che sia una delle persone più argute, più raffinate che abbia mai conosciuto! Pertanto ho voluto naturalmente che mi aiutasse a dare a Susie la sua voce. Il nostro processo è stato molto semplice: ho scattato le foto e per il testo ho preso i tweet di Justin dalla sua pagina di twitter e le ho abbinate allo scatto appropriato. In alcuni casi ho visto un tweet che mi piaceva ed ho scattato una foto da abbinare. É stato molto un processo in avanti e indietro”.
JVB: “Gina ed io siamo stati amici da lungo tempo. Ci siamo conosciuti a Fire Island quando ancora mi esibivo nelle vesti di Kiki nel mio numero di cabaret Kiki and Herb (premiato nel 2007 con il Tony nominated award). Gina ed io abbiamo deciso di realizzzare il merchandising per pubblicizzare Kiki and Herb così ci siamo seduti sulla terrazzo di casa sua a Fire Island, abbiamo fumato erba e realizzato braccialetti ornati di perline che dicevano “La gente muore””
Quali sono i tuoi prossimi progetti?
GG: “Sono nella fase di riprogettare una autentica bambola Susie! Originariamente era stata realizzata in modo molto modesto negli anni ’70, potrei fare migliorie!!) – sta per essere nuovamente una vamp ed avere un restyling e travolgerà il mondo con una tempesta molto presto!”
JVB: “Il mio nuovo CD, “Silver Wells”, sarà pubblicato il 5giugno. Interpreto su questo disco canzoni di svariati artisti che sono tutte scritte nella foggia di racconti in prima persona. È un paesaggio della mente, in parte ispirato da Maria Wyeth, la protagonista del racconto del 1970 di Joan Didion, “Prendila come viene” ”.
