The legendary British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood celebrates the successful continuation of the successful partnership with the Ethical Fashion Initiative( she started five years ago), a laudable project launched by the ITC (International Trade Centre an UN Agency working in the realm of ethical fashion to emancipate the Africa people from poverty through the work and its training) with a limited edition of Africa bags collection, made by artisans in Kenya. Over the past five years the involvement of the fashion designer has supported thousands of micro-producers from marginalized communities in these regions, developing their artisan skills and improving their financial prospects. This has promoted the growth of sustainable business instead of aid dependency. Craftsmanship and ideas on the move are impressed in the Africa bags that resonate with the activism of the queen of punk, are embodied in more the design, materials used  that raise questions on critical issues such as climate change and waste.

HEALTHY IDEAS ON THE MOVE: THE LAUNCH OF CO-BRANDING COLLECTION BY CARMINA CAMPUS & VIBRAM AT ENTRATA LIBERA

It has recently presented in Milan at Entrata libera, awesome concept store focused on the search in the realm of design, the collection of accessories made in co-branding by Carmina Campus and Vibram making concrete the categorical imperative “Save waste from waste”. An idea developed by Carmina Campus, brand of accessories, jewelry and furniture created by the bright, overwhelming pioneer fashion designer, farm businesswoman and social activist Ilaria Venturini Fendi and shared today with Vibram, renowned brand producing the rubber soles, which gave rise to a smashing collection of bags, made by re-using the rubber – more precisely, as Ilaria told me, the first rubber plate, resulting from the start of productive process and therefore it is useless -, thus taking away this material from the dump and turning into something wonderful. That evidences which can create without destroying, respecting the environment and earth which host us. It’ another way to see life, the world surrounding us, another way of thinking, working, creating, making and producing fashion, which emphasizes the idea of elegance as bringer of value and values. A healthy ethic is embodied in a vibrant aesthetics where it shines the approach of matter- and reminds me of work by Alberto Burri – and refinement. The many bags, as the nice rubber clutch bags are decorated by little, fun patterns made of rubber as well as other items, joining the rubber to other materials as leather and fur and are genuine passé-partout.

WHEN FASHION IS A LIFESTYLE: THE FORCE, PASSION & HEALTHY ETHIC OF VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Spring/Summer 2014, photo by Marcus Tondo
Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Spring/Summer 2014, photo by Marcus Tondo

Fashion as lifestyle, a unique aestethics depicting an asserting and ironic femininity – making fun of conventional clichés – and a vibrant ethic under the sign of social activism. That is the world of genius British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, who is considered as the queen of punk. Environment, climate, sustainability and freedom are the realms (as the campaign to promote the free information, support Wikileaks and its creator Julian Assange) supported by the fashion designer, creator also of a smashing blog, Active Resistance. The name of blog is a categorical imperative embodied in a Manifesto, focused on a practice, the search for culture and the thinking to change its own life and the world. “We have the choice to become more cultivated and therefore more human – or by muddling along as usual we shall remain the destructive and self-destroying animal, the victim of our own cleverness (To be or not to be)”. That is what the Manifesto asserts featuring as travellers who accompany Active Resistance, Alice, Pinocchio, Art Lover (an anthropologist), True Poet (an alchemist). This journey to find art shows that art gives culture and that culture is the antidote to propaganda (a leitmotiv of contemporary times including, as Aldous Huxley said, three evils: nationalistic idolatry, non-stop distractions and organized lying). These ideas aren’t just words flying on the air, but they become facts, actions and join to the creativity of Vivienne Westwood, becoming things, objects, garments. That shines in the Spring/Summer 2014 collection of Vivienne Westwood Gold Label, featuring the tartan woven from Burkina Fasu and accessories, made in Kenya by the Nairobi artisans. A successful initiative arising from the teaming with the ITC, a UN Agency, in order to emancipate from poverty the African people through work.

QUANDO LA MODA É UNO STILE DI VITA: LA FORZA, PASSIONE & SALUBRE ETICA DI VIVIENNE WESTWOOD

Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Spring/Summer 2014, photo by Marcus Tondo
Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Spring/Summer 2014, photo by Marcus Tondo

VFNO: THE ETHICAL FASHION INITIATIVE BY ITC & ALTAROMA FEATURING IN MILAN BIFFI BOUTIQUE

Rosy Biffi
Rosy Biffi, photo by N

Rosy Biffi goes ahead, the pioneer renowned buyer and owner of Milan Biffi boutiques, making a further step in supporting emerging creatives and promoting an healthy ethic as well as a healthy marketing idea, featuring the “givers” – the ones who are generous, focused on giving without thinking about an expectation or an immediate benefit arising from that and have the courage and the open-minded attitude to believe and concretely invest on an idea considering the development of a long-term business plan, as it is evidenced by the management professor and author Adam Grant in the book he wrote “Give and take” Sperling & Kupfer, 18,00 Euros – brings out of the catwalk and hosts on 17th September 2013 at the Biffi boutique in Corso Genova 6during the Milan edition of fashion event Vogue Fashion Night’s Out  a panel of creatives, Stella Jean, Portenier Roth, Kiki Clothing and Christie Brown, who featured in An Ethical Initiative, event created by Altaroma and UN agency ITC , included in the Altaroma latest edition. Another laudable initiative under the sign of ethical fashion – considered in its wide meaning, including manufacture as well as a vibrant concept – which has a bright purpose: to give the chances to bright creatives of being discovered and appreciated by the audience, by the ones who could buy the creations they made. I really wish this idea promoted by Rosy Biffi, who had and has the smartness and generosity to support emerging talents, spreads and is used in the other realms of fashion system. That would be an added value for the made in Italy as well as for the fashion system considered as a whole. A not to be missed happening to enjoy fashion and its suggestions, the individual value and values.

Cangiari, womenswear brand (of whose names arises from a word coming from Calabria slang which means “to change”) under the sign of craftsmanship and sustainability established by the Goel Group (of cooperatives working in the province of Reggio Calabria, my native city), presented during the latest edition of Altaroma the Spring/Summer 2014 collection, designed by Paulo Melim Andersson, featuring a catchy simplicity, natural colors along with bright shades of red and blue, fluid lines under  the sign of a sustainable elegance, being the purpose, creative process (considering the textiles, that are hand-made in Italy by using the ancient Calabria technique of weaving by loom and organic colors) and a successful result of brand.
