The project seeks to stem the tide of cultural amnesia by bridging the cultural gap between long time residents of New York’s Lower East Side and newcomers to the rapidly gentrifying neighborhood and includes personas as Taylor Mead, Quentin Crisp, Chi Chi Valente, Penny Arcade and many others – which tells about the story of a sex educator, author and artist. Betty Dodson, held the first one-woman show of erotic art at the Wickersham Gallery in New York City in 1968. Then she left the art world to teach sex to women. She is widely known as a pioneer in women’s sexual liberation, having sold more than 1 million copies of her first book, “Sex for One” (Three Rivers Press, 15,00 $). Much of her fame has come from her work advocating masturbation, but conducting workshops for more than 30 years in which groups of about 10 or more women (and at least once a group of men) talk, explore their own bodies, and masturbate together. A not to be missed event to know and appreciate a brilliant mind, reflect and hopefully to get more consciousness about sex and sexuality under the sign of freedom and spontaneity.

The charismatic, brilliant actor and fashion designer John Malkovich who created the menswear brand Technobohémien – arisen from his eternal passion for textiles of whose he is a collector, successfully joining “a timeless elegance to high-end materials” as he asserted about one year ago when I met him during the launch of brand -, of whose creations he made, by using the renowned fabrics from the Prato textile district, were showcased in an exhibition, recently opened in Rome at the Rossmut concept store – which will run through 13th January 2013 -, curated by Jack Fisher featuring also the creations by the artist Paolo Angelosanto. Fashion and art as the actor will interpret the legendary lover Giacomo Casanova in “The Giacomo Variations”, opera directed by Michael Sturminger and co-starring Ingeborga Dapkünaité of whose American premiere will be held in New York at the New York City Center from 31st May to 2nd June 2013. The performance is inspired by Casanova’s 1790 memoir “Histoire de ma vie” along with of Mozart’s best-known operas – Cosi Fan Tutte, Don Giovanniand The Marriage of Figaro – performed live by a Wiener Academy Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Martin Haselböck. A not to be missed happening to enjoy John Malkovich in one of the roles which fits at best on him, the seducer.

Gallery running until 4th December 2012) who will explore the theme of camp – that influenced greatly art, aesthetics, consumer-capitalism and gender identity – through performances and films, academic and artistic presentations in order to question its ability to explain the diversity of underrated cultural practices. I recently visited the blog of smashing artist and song-writer Anne Pigalle and I read many posts she wrote concerning the appropriation of artistic ideas, reinterpretetations, style and not only, made by the celebrated pop star Lady Gaga. I immediately reminded a circumstance happened one year ago, involving the pop star: the showcase of an installation by Lady Gaga in New York at Barneys boutique that was a copy of the same work made in the Eighties by the renowned New York underground artist Colette as she asserted. That is just another event which proves the common feeling of many artists who live and work in downtown New York – they are not the only ones – who think Lady Gaga or rather her working staff copies their ideas, style and other. Beyond what it deals with the issue concerning Lady Gaga – artist I considered by a semiotic point of view time ago, regarding the rise of an icon during the contemporary times – and the ownership of ideas, a land having very weak boundaries, that is an evidence of a custom which today unfortunately became very popular: the copy and paste. This custom affects every realm of human expression as visual arts as well as fashion and it works as a mirror to look at the contemporary culture, making concrete the lack of new ideas, turned into post-modern works and products. Why does it happen? The issue is always the same: culture is not a matter of interest for the mainstream. Culture animates, guides, renews the thought, but it stopped due to many reasons: policy, education, collective unconscious and last but the least the economic crisis. The result has been the increase of narcolepticism and consequently of every new, postmodern idea, product. The remedy of post-modernism satisfies the prompt decoding of every new idea which makes it more easily knowable and recognizable by the mass. Thus it’s worthwhile developing a postmodern or product. The paradox is that is considered new. The non-existence of any avant-garde movement affecting visual arts, architecture, fashion, music, cinema as well as the sub-cultures – except the post-modern versions of punk, new-romantic movements as the post-punk and post-romantic ones – proves it lacks something today, it features just ignorance, a mental laziness, the minds are clouded, it reigns the superficiality, emphasized by the ethic of “produce, consume, die”, as it sang yesterday Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, front-man of the Italian punk band CCCP. A question spontaneously arises, enriching of new contents the question by Erich Fromm “to have or to be?”, turned into “to have or to be or to pretend of being?”. The pretentiousness goes hand in hand with ignorance. The status quo is tragic, but fortunately tragedy is not the only one that features in the contemporary times. It also exists a constellation of individuals, creatives – little stars spread around the world -, acting in the opposite sense, working hardly to make and create something which is really new, genuine, original and vibrant – and not junk -, but as it often happens it doesn’t get the recognition which deserves. This is the leitmotiv of underground culture or rather culture, as today the culture became underground, along with the exceptions proving the rule, something which is not looked for or requested. More communication, the syncretism between mass and underground culture would be a way to create a new dynamism along with the circulation of ideas which would result from, contributing to give rise to something which is really different, new.
POSTMODERNISMO, APPROPRIAZIONE DI IDEE E LA PRASSI DEL COPIA & INCOLLA

Ho recentemente visitato il blog della formidabile artista e cantautrice Anne Pigalle ed ho letto svariati post da lei scritti inerenti l’ appropriazione di idee, reinterpretazioni, lo stile e non soltanto, effettuato dalla rinomata pop-star Lady Gaga. Ho immediatamente ripensato a un evento accaduto un anno fa che riguarda la pop-star: l’ esposizione di una installazione di Lady Gaga presso la boutique Barneys di New York che era una copia di un’ opera realizzata negli anni Ottanta dalla celebre artista underground Colette come è stato da lei affermato. Questo é soltanto un altro evento che conferma il comune sentire di molteplici artisti che vivono e lavorano nella downtown newyorkese – non sono gli unici – e ritengono che Lady Gaga o meglio il suo staff copi, rubi, le loro idee, lo stile e altro. Al di là di ciò che riguarda la problematica inerente Lady Gaga – artista che tempo fa ho preso in considerazione da un punto di vista semiotico, riguardante la nascita di una icona nella contemporaneità – e la titolarità di idee, un territorio dai confini molto labili, tutto ciò dimostra una prassi che oggi è sfortunatamente è divenuta molto popolare: il copia e incolla. Questa prassi colpisce ogni ambito di espressione dell’ uomo quali le arti visive come anche la moda, funge da specchio per osservare la cultura contemporanea e concretizza la mancanza di nuove idee, trasformate in opere e prodotti post-moderni. Perché accade ciò? La questione è sempre la stessa: la cultura non è materia di interesse per il mainstream. La cultura anima, guida, rinnova il pensiero, ma si è fermata a causa di svariate ragioni: la politica, l’ istruzione, l’ inconscio collettivo e ultima, ma non meno importante, la crisi economica. Il risultato è stato l’ aumento della narcolessia e conseguentemente di ogni nuova idea, prodotto post-moderno. Il ricorso al post-modernismo soddisfa la pronta decodificazione di una nuova idea che la rende più agevolmente conoscibile e riconoscibile dalla massa ed è pertanto proficuo elaborare un idea o prodotto postmoderno. Il paradosso è che ciò è considerato nuovo. L’ inesistenza di una avanguardia che influenzi le arti visive, l’ architettura, moda, musica e il cinema come anche le subculture – ad eccezione delle versioni post-moderne dei movimenti punk, new-romantic quali il post-punk ed il post-romantic – prova che oggi manca qualcosa, l’ ignoranza é la protagonista come anche una pigrizia mentale, le menti sono obnubilate, la superficialità impera, enfatizzata dall’ etica del “produci, consuma, crepa”, come cantava ieri Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, leader della band italiana punk CCCP. Una domanda nasce spontanea che arricchisce di nuovi contenuti il quesito di Erich Fromm “avere o essere?”, trasformato in “avere o essere o pretendere di essere?”. La pretenziosità va di pari passo all’ ignoranza. Lo status quo é tragico, ma fortunatamente la tragedia non é l’ unica protagonista della contemporaneità. Esiste anche una costellazione di individui, creativi – piccole stelle sparse in tutto il mondo – che agiscono in senso opposto, lavorando duramente per fare e creare qualcosa che sia davvero nuovo, autentico, originale – e non junk -, ma come sovente accade costoro non hanno il riconoscimento che meritano. Questo è il leitmotiv della cultura underground o meglio della cultura, in quanto oggi la cultura é divenuta underground unitamente alle eccezioni che confermano la regola, qualcosa che non é cercato o richiesto. Un maggiore dialogo, il sincretismo tra cultura di massa e underground sarebbe un modo per creare un nuovo dinamismo unitamente alla circolazione di idee che ne conseguirebbe, contribuendo a dar vita a qualcosa che sia davvero diverso, nuovo.

Si terrà dal 19 ottobre 2012 al 3febbraio 2013 a Vienna presso il Kunsthalle “Xtravaganza, staging Leigh Bowery”, mostra, curata da Angela Stief che rende omaggio a Leigh Bowery, indimenticabile personaggio, celebre designer and performer, protagonista negli anni Ottanta della scena new-romantic nelle vesti di Blitz Kid a Londra e successivamente nei primi anni Novanta quale Club Kid nella scena dei locali di New York creata dall’ iconico party-promoter Michael Alig. It successfully follows the series of events “Queer, art, film”, created by the bright filmmaker Ira Sachs which is held from the 8:00 to 11:00 pm in New York at the IFC Center, where tonight will be presented by the celebrated playwright and LBGT rights activist Larry Kramer the legendary film “Jules & Jim”, by François Truffaut, telling about the love, friendship and passionate ménage-a- trois between two men and the enigmatic Jean Moreau – of whose I like reminding her quotation, included in the movie: “you told me I love you, I told you wait for me, I was going to tell you her I am, you told me go away” over the course of twenty years. A genuine master to watch again and appreciate.

Prosegue felicemente la serie di eventi “Queer, art, film”, creata dal brillante regista Ira Sachs che si tiene dalle 20:00 alle ore 23:00 a New York presso il IFC Center in cui stasera sarà presentata dal celebre commediografo e attivista dei diritti LBGT Larry Kramer la leggendaria pellicola “Jules & Jim” di François Truffaut che narra l’ amore, amicizia e l’ appassionante ménage-a-trois tra due uomini e l’ enigmatica Jeanne Moreau – di cui mi piace ricordare le sue parole incluse nel film: “mi hai detto ti amo, ti dissi aspettami, stavo per dirti eccomi, tu mi hai detto vattene “ – nell’arco di venti anni. Un autentico capolavoro da rivedere e apprezzare.
