“Gas, Food, Lodging” is a movie by Allison Anders  from the 90′s which takes place in New Mexico. The main character, Shade (Fairuza Balk) is a teenager living with her mom (Brooke Adams) and her older and very sexy sister (Ione Skye) in a trailer park. She fantasizes about her life, watches Latino silent movies, listens to music with her gay best friend, shops in thrift stores, meets her first boyfriend… Needless to say, I could totally identify with this alternative version of the teenage movie. But it goes much beyond the story of these three women : it is a reflexion on art and on judgment. Shade is indeed a smart yet very naive character who has no preconceived ideas about anything. And it is because of that state of mind that she is able to see and share the beauty and poetic dimension of everything around her.

I often hear people mourning for the carefreeness and freedom they experienced when they were very young, but they seem to forgot that at some point, they became afraid of disappointment or of other people’s judgement. And i think that art is there to challenge you everyday about those choices you make for yourself. Which is why we need art.

Because art connects us with freedom. Art allows us to dream, to grow, to expand our experience of the world, to find beauty where we would not have expected to find it. It keeps our minds awake. A song, a movie, a photo, a painting, a sculpture, a poem, a novel, a drawing can create a brand new vision of our world. Art makes life new again. Every time we need it.

But they’re just afraid of disappointment. I guess I’m more afraid of not having any daydreams left. I mean disappointment is easy, you can get over it. “Gas, Food, Lodging” è un film di Allison Anders degli anni ‘ 90, ambientato nel Nuovo Messico. Il personaggio principale, Shade (Fairuza Balk) è una teenager che vive con la madre (Brooke Adams) e la sua estemamente sexy sorella più grande (Ione Skye) in un parcheggio di roulotte. Fantastica sulla sua vita, guarda film muti latino-americani, ascolta musica con il suo migliore amico gay, compra nei negozi dell’usato, incontra il suo primo ragazzo…Non c’ bisogno di dire che potrei completamente identificarmi con questa versione alternativa dell’adolescenza del film. Ma ciò va molto oltre la storia di queste tre donne: è una riflessione sull’arte e sul giudizio. Shade è un personaggio intelligente eppure molto naif che non ha alcuna idea preconcetta su nulla. E ciò accade in ragione di quella condizione spirituale per cui ella è capace di vedere e condividere la bellezza e la dimensione poetica di ogni cosa intorno a lei. Spesso sento la gente che si lamenta della spensieratezza e libertà che ha sperimentato quando era molto giovane, ma sembrano aver dimenticato che a un certo punto, hanno iniziato a temere la delusione o il giudizio di altre persone. E penso che l’arte ci sia per mettersi ogni giorno in discussione riguardo alle scelte che ognuno può fare per sè stesso. Ciò è il motivo per cui abbiamo bisogno dell’arte.

Perchè l’arte ci connette alla libertà. L’arte ci permette di sognare, crescere, espandere la nostra esperienza del mondo, trovare la bellezza laddove non ci mai saremmo aspettati di trovarla. Tiene le nostre menti sveglie. Una canzone, un film, una fotografia, un quadro, una scultura, una poesia, un racconto, un disegno può creare un nuovo modo di vedere il nostro mondo. L’ arte rinnova la nostra vita. Ogni volta che ne abbiamo bisogno.

“Le cose non vanno sempre come vorremmo che fossero”. E nella mia esperienza ciò non accade quasi mai. Un sacco di gente dice che sia sciocco avere aspettative su ogni cosa. Ma hanno solo paura della delusione. Penso che mi faccia più paura non aver abbandonato un sogno ad occhi aperti. Voglio dire che la delusione è semplice, puoi dimenticarla. Proprio come Shade, sarò sempre grata alle persone che mi hanno permesso di mantenere in vita la mia mente e il mio cuore e sognare.
